An open letter to: Senators Sanders and Leahy and Congressman Welch

by Linda Kirker

Our Congressional delegation is elected to be the stewards of our U.S. economy and national safety and security. Why , under your watch, and under the Obama Administration, has U.S. debt skyrocketed by four TRILLION DOLLARS to a high of $15 + TRILLION DOLLARS in the last three years? Escalating U.S. debt and the costs of doing business in the U.S.A. put our country and our citizens in a position of extreme vulnerability at home and internationally. How can America have negotiating power with countries like China and Japan when they hold plenty of our national debt? U.S. Founding Father Thomas Jefferson said…”It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.”

There are plenty of ways to pay off our national debt….IF the will is there to do so. How about looking at the list of ALL places and the multi-billions of dollars that U.S. taxpayers are sending, unknowingly , and unwillingly, to foreign countries and international organizations that are anti-American such as the United Nations? Spending is not all about military obligations. Provide a list to your constituents of ALL countries and non-U.S. organizations that are recipients of U.S. taxpayer dollars. As Americans of low and moderate income are feeling the pain of higher taxes and fees at the state and local level, ever-increasing food and fuel costs, and high costs of doing business in the U.S., we are fearful of what Congress and the Senate will thrust onto us next.

We need to be able to trust that those whom we elect will fulfill their oaths of office to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution , the Supreme Law of our Land and the protector of our rights as U.S. citizens. While you are living like elitists on the backs of your constituents, families in Vermont and around the nation are frustrated, angry and worried that they cannot depend on you to exercise common sense in Washington, D.C. You have an obligation to pay the debts that have been incurred by Congress on behalf of our nation. You have a responsibility to protect the free market capitalist system that has, for over two-hundred years, been the backbone of American prosperity and strength. Too many Americans are unemployed, under-employed and dependent on an ever-expanding federal government that the employed cannot afford to support. A bankrupt government is a disgrace to those who run our government. We deserve better! According to Robert F. Kennedy (D), U.S. Senator, Attorney General, “The problem of power is how to achieve its responsible use rather than its irresponsible and indulgent use….of how to get men of power to live FOR the public rather than OFF the public.”

Please do not support U.N. treaties that clearly will diminish the Constitutional rights and protections that we enjoy as Americans. The Small Arms Treaty, the Treaty of the Seas, Treaty of the Children, and other approaches that will deprive U.S. citizens of our precious liberties. I have read that China has a water shortage and is withdrawing water from Lake Michigan. Nestles Corporation is bottling the water for China. Who authorized China to remove water from tributaries to Lake Michigan?

In November, we must elect people to Congress who have the courage and wisdom to stand strong for the principles of our democratic republic -to make the difficult decisions to return our nation to greatness for our children and grandchildren. We don’t want to become part of a “One World Government” where our unique and precious American Constitutional rights will be shredded. We are not “global citizens”- we are American Citizens living in an international world.

Felix Rohatyn , long-term advisor to the U.S. Democratic Party, investment banker and U.S. Ambassador to France, once said “Fairness does not require the redistribution of wealth; it requires the creation of wealth, geared to an economy that can provide employment for everyone able and willing to work.”

We cannot understand why Capitol Hill has been “functioning” without a national budget for three years. Is that how you run your own household? No budget, no limits on spending for Congress or the White House. That is the height of irresponsibility! We will remember in November. And don’t attack (tax) the 401-k retirement savings of hardworking Americans to balance the budget. Start a zero-based budget process. Forget the special interests that fund your re-election campaigns and do the right thing for the American people. Our children and grandchildren will wonder why we allowed you and others to put our citizens and the future of our country at great risk. That must change in November 2012!

  1. Great letter Linda. How very unlike the Vermont style. There are many in this State who “eat for free”, entitled people who are not humble. Where ethics are swapped for entitlements, there is no dignity or shame.
The creation of entitlements has erased the stigma associated with taking charity and has neutralized the humility associated with the acceptance of unearned benefits . Notwithstanding, the LBJ “Great Society” entitlements which were supposed to have eliminated poverty in America they have not done so in 50 years. They have instead indirectly promoted and dignified the pursuit of couch-potato lifestyles of parasites who leech from the public purse. It is time to reverse course. The cure for our country’s economic problems will only come about by the exercise of a politically incorrect but natural stimulus – it is the stimulus of need.

  2. Your words are music to my ears! You have expressed my thoughts better than I could. Thank you.

  3. Outstanding summary of the problems and solutions we need to restore prosperity. Congratulations.
