California residents being asked to house booming homeless population in their backyard sheds

By Gabrielle Okun

Los Angeles County asked homeowners to shelter homeless people in their backyard sheds, according to the Los Angeles Times Wednesday.

Homeowners might get paid to house the homeless in small sheds in their backyards, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Los Angeles City Council approved two new laws Wednesday to expedite the construction of the homeless city-housing project and a second that allows motels to be used as housing for the less fortunate in the meantime. Motels are also required to have counseling and substance abuse programs for the destitute, CurbedLA added.

The number of Los Angeles’ homeless in the past six years greatly increased by 75 percent from 32,000 to 55,000. The number grows to 58,000 if Glendale, Pasadena and Long Beach are included in the statistics, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Board of Supervisors approved a $550,000 pilot program to build small houses for homeworkers who agreed to house a homeless person in August 2017. Charitable giving organization Bloomberg Philanthropies also awarded a $100,000 Mayor’s Challenge grant to Los Angeles to research the concept of housing units for homeless folks in backyards.
“People are looking at what they can do to make our neighborhoods more affordable and help more Angelenos find stable places to live,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

“We were overwhelmed with the interest,” said Economic and Housing Development Division manager Larry Newman of the county’s Community Development Commission.

Voters also agreed to pay $1.2 billion in taxes to help with homeless city housing in Los Angeles County back in 2016. This is expected to help build 10,000 homeless housing units.

  1. Good California get what it deserves, Liberal fools running the state. I just don’t get why VT
still has a problem, Oh yeah it’s our own Liberal thinkers that instead of really helping the
    homeless they are just enablers.

They give them food room & board for the night and send them back to the streets during the
day to pan handle for ( Booze & Drugs ) …………….. Enablers

Burlington fixed there problem, they made them leave the market place as it was offending
the shop owners, so they moved to the side streets, same story different street !!

    Liberals never fix a thing…………

  2. I propose we do the same for the homeless or those with substance abuse problems in sheds and sugar houses here in Vermont.I have heard talk about the use of census data to find unused bedrooms in private homes to house newly minted immigrants that are the victims of violent gangs, wars,or economic blight from that which they came.

  3. Drug use goes up – so does homeless. Linkage – you bet! WAKE UP America – you are going down the toilet with liberal views on drug use ….

  4. California’s homeless population problems will ever increase now that California has legalized marijuana for recreational use. Many will come to seek their pot at the end of the rainbow and will bring with them all the problems the cost of which will be borne by those poor middle-class folks working to cover the bills. Good climate is the magnet with the lure of pot-entail high living and that adds up to an even greater % increase of homeless. Look at what pot did to the 6th most desirable city in the US to live once. Pueblo Colorado is now the most crime infested city in Colorado. Guess why? You should check it out with people who work in services, like emergency rooms. High potency THC marijuana is bringing them psychotic patients almost daily. They said crime would go away if marijuana was legalized. Foreign drug cartels and all the crime they bring are flourishing in Pueblo. Look for the same problem in Vermont to happen, especially in the warm months thanks to Phil Scott and all his liberal-progressive friends in the Vermont legislature. Remember in November!

  5. California residents deserve what they get. They voted the Progressives in and now the Progressives are destroying their towns and cities. Good going.

  6. Unlike in at least Burlington, VT, where initiatives are shoved down our throats or have no meaning when they’re posed as advsory questions, at least Los Angeles County voters got to weigh in: “Voters also agreed to pay $1.2 billion in taxes to help with homeless city housing in Los Angeles County back in 2016. This is expected to help build 10,000 homeless housing units.”
