Despite the spin that Republicans need to stay away from the social issues in order to be politically competetive, it is the Democrats who have a problem when it comes to social issues. True North Reports carried a Press Release by Vermont Right to Life last week taking Governor Shumin and Vermont Democrats to task for their vocal backing of Texas Democrats’ efforts to oppose a ban on abortions after 20 weeks. As it turns out, the Vermont Right to Life has highlighted an issue in which the Democrats are on the opposing side of an overwhelming number of Americans. A recent poll by the left leaning Huffington Post has shown that a clear majority of Americans support a ban on abortions after 20 weeks:
Most Americans would favor sweeping new national restrictions on abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. But the poll also shows many Americans remain conflicted in their views on abortion.
By a margin of 59 percent to 30 percent, respondents to the new poll said they would favor a federal law banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Does the GOP have the political savvy to take advantage of an issue that the Democrats are clearly on the wrong side of public opinion, or are they going to let their allergic reaction to social issues cause them to miss this opportunity? Stay tuned.
