Congressman Welch Shows Blatant Disrespect for Parents of Murdered Americans
The talk in the news today is focused on the partisan bickering about the debt ceiling, excessive borrowing and of course the complete melt-down of the Obamacare roll-out. All this noise has allowed the scandal of the Benghazi terrorist attack to fade into the background, at least for the moment.
Democrats desperately want the whole bungled Benghazi issue to go away entirely, including Vermont’s Democrat Representative Peter Welch, who recently exposed his blind partisanship when he refused to participate in House Oversight Committee proceedings to hear the testimony of the parents of two of the murdered Americans.
The Benghazi attack and it’s aftermath has exposed the Obama administration as bald-faced liars, desperate to cover up a coordinated terrorist attack prior to the reelection of a president who had declared victory in the war on terror. The scandal associated with the attack also threatened to bring to light the dysfunctional inter-agency turf war between Secretary of State Hilary Clinton’s State Department and the Department of Defense.
Clinton was relentlessly and recklessly pursuing a policy of “normalization’ in Libya in order to advance the Obama administrations assertions that al Qaeda was “on the run” and the war on terror had been won. According to the administration’s narrative, this was largely due the presidents heroic efforts during the capture and execution of Osama bin Laden. (In fact, the President spent most of the hours leading up to bin Laden’s capture playing 15 games of the spades with his former personal assistant Reggie Love. Love recalled the heroic Obama saying, “I’m not going to be down there [The Situation Room]. I can’t watch this entire thing”.
Clinton’s Libya policy divided the State Department and Defense. According to Representative Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, the rift between the two agencies weakened cooperation, and the assets that the U.S. could have deployed to help the Americans stranded in the consulate were not deployed. Clinton’s State Department didn’t want to involve the military “for the sake of appearances”, according to Issa.
As a result of Clinton’s wrong-headed, politically motivated decisions, four Americans, including United States Ambassador Chris Stevens, were murdered and 10 others were wounded in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2012. Also killed were Information Officer Sean Smith and Navy Seals Glen Doherty and Tyron Woods, who waited for and expected reinforcements that never arrived. The political concerns of Clinton and Obama took precedence over the lives of those who served on the ground, and they were abandoned as a matter of political expediency.
After the attack, the administration went into full cover-up mode, insisting that the assault was the result of a video that was offensive to Islam. After repeating this assertion over and over again for days, they finally, grudgingly had to admit that it was, indeed a terrorist attack. The Obama administration and Clinton both desperately wanted the whole episode to fade from the public consciousness and quickly. One was facing reelection and the other has aspirations to become the first woman to occupy the Oval Office as Commander In Chief. The press and the Democrats in Congress attempted to close ranks to protect them, but cries for the truth, and justice for the slain Americans, continued, and the House Oversight Committee hearings began.
During one hearing before the House Oversight Committee, when they were finally able to interview Secretary Clinton in order to determine her role in the attack, the Presidential hopeful exploded into an unseemly and utterly undiplomatic rant while being questioned by Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson. “With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans,” she screeched. “Was it because of a protest of was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided to go kill some Americans. What difference does it make?” It’s our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again.”
Well, it turns out that the families of the “dead Americans” do think it makes a difference, and the parents of Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith have been vocally insistent that they shall have answers. They desperately want to place accountability for the attack where it belongs. Their refusal to give up, their continued pressure and questioning, eventually led Patricia Smith and Charles Woods to testify before the House Oversight Committee recently about their son’s lives – and their deaths.
Patricia Smith remains outraged about the lies told to her, in person, by both President Obama and Secretary Clinton. She testified that during the casket ceremony, with her son’s body nearby, when she asked the President and the Secretary of State “what happened?” both Hilary and President Obama told her that Sean’s death was because of a video. “They all lied to me,” she said.
They all lied to the American people too, until the facts overtook the narrative.
Incredibly, most of the House Democrats on the committee never heard Smith’s words. Prior to her testimony, 15 Democrats on the Committee walked out and never returned to hear the testimony of parents who desperately want answers about their children’s murder, and accountability from the government officials who, because of selfish political concerns, set in motion the appalling chain of events.
Sadly for Vermont, our lone Representative, Peter Welch, joined the others in this blatantly disrespectful act. Apparently they do not care to hear from regular, grieving folks who inconveniently demand answers, insisting that those responsible for abandoning Americans to violent death in a foreign land should be held accountable.
In fairness, True North Reports queried Welch’s office several times about this, willing to extend the benefit of the doubt if he had pressing business elsewhere. But no answer is often the only answer. Having chosen not to prove otherwise, it’s apparent that he joined his fellow Democrats in a shameful, partisan show of disdain for Patricia Smith and Charles Woods, and ultimately for all Americans who want answers, regardless of whose political aspirations are thwarted.
