Flashback: UN environmental official predicted nations wiped off earth by 2000

By John McClaughry

Here’s an interesting story from Associated Press, dated June 29, 1989:

“A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.”

Signs predict rising tides from global warming will overtake large areas of land by 2050.

“Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of “eco-refugees,” threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.”

It adds: “He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.”

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told the Associated Press in an interview.

“Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.”

Well, 30 years have gone by since that outburst from a United Nations official, and 19 years since nations were supposed to disappear. Notice any missing nations?

This is just an early example of the hysterical hype fed to us by the UN and its climate bodies. When their scare stories don’t pan out, they just invent new ones.

  1. That’s how propagandists keep getting elected, spew out doom and gloom, shows they care. “A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.”

The Shackleton event was truly amazing, against all odds a wonderment across that huge expanse of ocean with some of the roughest water in the world. PBS NOVA just had a program much the same. Ships from England stuck in the Arctic ice. Gut wrenching in some places to watch. They found one of the two ships, on the ocean bottom 30 feet down. I can’t imagine being in either of their two positions. Guess I’m getting older. I’ve done some crazy things, but not that bad.

  2. Great article.

Meanwhile they are trying to get Shackleton’s ship out of the frozen ice. He sailed down there around 1903, when his ship became crushed in ice, it’s been frozen in that ice and still is over 100 years later. Apparently the ice is 10 feet thick, still, which would have been impossible to navigate in 1903, the ice has gotten thicker….

they won’t talk about this, now will they?

The oldest trick in the book is to tell a population the world is going to end, every ancient religion has used it, same for ancient countries/oligarchs.

If Vermont taught history, critical thinking, science instead of indoctrination, people wouldn’t be so quick to fall for the propaganda.

But then Vermont isn’t tolerant of any none party thinking. Censored 4x today on Vermont digger. Wonder how many hundreds of logical comments were kept from seeing the light of day on statewide press?

    • They also don’t talk much about Chris Turney, a professor of “climate change” who’s group of climate tards got stuck in the FORMING ICE SHELVES, that they said were in decline. They were going to trace the Shackleton exploration and film the “difference” in ice between 1914 and 2013.

This is all right on the money in the leftards play book, promote fear and promise you can alleviate it. Except in the case where you get stuck in the ice just like Shakleton did

  3. Here are a few more:

    “• “North Pole could be ice-free in 2008” – M.Serreze (New Scientist 2008)
    • “Gore: Polar ice cap may disappear by summer 2014” (USAToday 2009)
    • “Arctic expert predicts final collapse of sea ice within 4 years” (Guardian 2012)
    • “Say Goodbye to Arctic Ice” (Live Science 2013)”

  4. The sky falling, The sky is falling …………… again !!

The new 2019 fear monger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez states we only have twelve years
before the world explodes ………….. So hurry get a Prius & solar panels on your house.

  5. Was Al Gore working with him. These liberals thrive on scare tactics. Always have, Always will..
