If we’re going to buy nuclear, buy local!

Here is my thought about the “plan” to close Vermont Yankee and buy Seabrook electricity: nuclear power without the instate jobs and taxes? Really? What kind of policy is that? All I hear about in the letters section of the newspaper is the “Danger of Nuclear Power” (which given the actual stellar U.S. safety record I don’t agree with). And after our state’s energy planners and officials give the back of their hand to Vermont Yankee’s jobs and income taxes and real estate taxes, they go and buy…..more nuclear power? No, hypocrisy there guys? Reminds me of something my now deceased father used to say, “Do as I say, not as I do!”…which also reminds me of another saying, “Not in my back yard”, then they go and buy nuclear power from someone else’s back yard! This is the epitome of hypocrisy.

Memo to the energy policy folks: if you are going to use nuclear power to keep the lights and computers and toasters turned on, buy it in-state. That gives you the added “bang for the buck” of economic empowerment. Instead we seem to have tossed out the proverbial baby out with the bathwater.
