Preparing for ‘every eventuality’ with Act 46

BRATTLEBORO — Given the uncertainty around a merger of local school districts, articles for annual town meetings are being warned with an eye toward what could play out in the courts.

“Brattleboro has consistently, calmly and emphatically moved forward with the idea that we want what’s best for Brattleboro taxpayers,” Brattleboro Town School Board Chairwoman Jill Stahl Tyler said Tuesday. “This prepares for every eventuality.”

Brattleboro Town School District is not a party in any of the litigation challenging the constitutionality of Act 46; the lawsuit has delayed the transition process of an ordered merger of districts within the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union and others around the state. But Dummerston Town School District is part of the suit, and it has warned a budget vote for March “as required by statute,” said its school board Chairwoman Kristina Naylor.

The warning for the Brattleboro district will have articles to vote on regarding auditors’ reports, salaries, grants, employing public accountants, and confirming clerk and treasurer for the district.
