Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said President Donald Trump is making good on his promise to rebalance the powers of government following Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Monday announcement that the administration is ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Ryan encouraged the president to hold off on ending the Obama-era program Friday and argued Congress should find a legislative solution. He said the six-month delay on implementation will give lawmakers enough time to craft DACA reforms.

“However well-intentioned, President Obama’s DACA program was a clear abuse of executive authority, an attempt to create law out of thin air,” he said in a statement. “Just as the courts have already struck down similar Obama policy, this was never a viable long-term solution to this challenge. Congress writes laws, not the president, and ending this program fulfills a promise that President Trump made to restore the proper role of the executive and legislative branches.”

The Wisconsin Republican has called for a humane fix to the program, which provides a safeguard for more than 800,000 illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

“At the heart of this issue are young people who came to this country through no fault of their own, and for many of them, it’s the only country they know,” he continued. “Their status is one of many immigration issues, such as border security and interior enforcement, which Congress has failed to adequately address over the years.”

Trump took to social media ahead of the announcement to tell lawmakers to brace themselves to work on the issue.

“Congress, get ready to do your job – DACA!” he tweeted.

Ryan said he’s hopeful both chambers with the administration can craft an appropriate solution.

“It is my hope that the House and Senate, with the president’s leadership, will be able to find consensus on a permanent legislative solution that includes ensuring that those who have done nothing wrong can still contribute as a valued part of this great country,” Ryan said.
