Statehouse Headliners: As count continues, House GOP 13 shy of 51 needed to uphold veto

With vote tallies continuing late into the night, Vermont Republicans appear to have picked up 38 of the minimum 51 House seats needed to sustain a veto by Gov. Phil Scott.

The apparent, unofficial count, according to voting totals reported on the Vermont Secretary of State website, is 88 seats won by Democrats, 38 by Republicans, and 4 by independents. That means that to reach 51, the GOP must win 13 of the remaining 20 undetermined seats.

The Vermont Constitution (Chapter 2, Section 11) permits the Legislature to override a governor’s veto with “two-thirds of the members present” of first the House, and then the Senate.

Many multi-town districts are still waiting for reports from one or more towns. Only districts with all towns reporting are included in the “winners” below. As of 10:45 pm tonight, here’s how the count looks, according to the VT Secretary of State website:
