Lindberg: Is ‘Me too’ trend a Democrat problem?

By Stu Lindberg

An article titled “Women in Vermont Statehouse say: ‘Me too’” appeared in VTDigger last week and focused on problems of sexual misconduct in the Vermont Legislature.

It is shocking to me that these kinds of disgusting and disrespectful incidents still happen in the most liberal, progressive, and Democrat statehouse in the nation. Of course, it is only Republicans like Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey that are capable of being sexual miscreants. Oops! Those guys aren’t Republicans — they’re Democrats.

Windham County Sen. Becca Balint’s comments in the article are illustrative of the kind of Democrat progressive thinking that prevails in the Vermont Assembly. Balint, who chairs the sexual harassment panel in the Senate, says intimidation exists in the Legislature, and it’s coming from white heterosexuals. She states, “Whether you’re a woman or you’re a person of color or a gay person in an environment that’s overwhelmingly white and heterosexual, you do question how you’re going to make a place for yourself.”

The problem is white heterosexuals?

Windham County, with a population of 44,513, is 95 percent white. Vermont as a whole is 95 percent white. According to the Vermont Secretary of State’s election results page, 11,174 Windham County residents voted to send Ms. Balint to her position of prestige and power in the Senate. Using recent demographic data one can estimate that 10,085 white heterosexuals trusted Sen. Balint enough to elect her. This raises a few questions. Does Balint believe that her white and heterosexual constituents and the people that voted for her are trying to relegate her and other minorities to second class citizenship? Is Balint implying that the sexual misconduct problem at the Statehouse is exclusive to white heterosexuals because of some racial defect or a defect of sexual orientation?

More than a century ago, 1915 to be exact, the first full length feature film was produced in Hollywood. It was called “The Birth of a Nation.” It is perhaps the most racist movie ever made. The film depicts blacks as violent rapists unable to control their behavior. Disgusting. However, the most prominent progressive Democrat of that era, President Woodrow Wilson, after viewing the film, was quoted as saying, “It’s like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all terribly true.”

I don’t see much difference in the insinuating remarks of Sen. Balint and the bigoted remarks of President Wilson.

One has to wonder if the sexual misconduct in the Vermont Statehouse, other statehouses, and Hollywood has less to do with white heterosexuals and more to do with being a progressive or a Democrat.

  1. All about gender, race, or any other identity meme they can concoct. All while they are “fiddling” with this—-“Rome burns”.
