That is what the headline of this Fox News piece should read. The piece is about how Vermont Yankee supporters are “running out of time”. Some of their business supporters wrote to Governor Shumlin explaining the problems posed to our economy by shutting Vermont Yankee down. Here is the response to their concerns:
“We have looked over the letter and obviously these are concerns that we have heard previously,” says press secretary Bianca Slota.
Slota says the governor still wants the plant closed.
She says there is no proof keeping Yankee open would mean lower power prices and the jobs won’t be lost immediately.
Putting aside the questionable assertion that there is no proof that keeping Vermont Yankee open would mean lower energy prices, are we to be satisfied that “jobs won’t be lost immediately”? Assuming that this is true, is that something to cheer? The implication is that there will be job losses, they just will not be immediate. Well, that makes all the difference in the world. We can all breath a sigh of relief. On the other hand, what if we do not want to accept job losses at all? What if we want to grow the economy? Without a change in our leadership, Vermont’s economy is running out of time.
